No Sew Burlap and Lace Corsage and Boutonniere

Simple and quick Matching burlap and lace corsage and boutonniere sets. Perfect for weddings, dances, parties, anniversaries. Shabby Chic and elegant. Vintage, Country rustic weddings.I love the combination of burlap, lace, and smooth white fabrics. It seems so…. classic.  It seems that you can find burlap and lace all over the place lately. It’s fun to see the combination of the country rustic from the burlap combined with the delicate smooth lace overlays.  I’ve seen some beautiful vintage lace wedding photos as well as classic and charming home decor. Boutiques and parties are some other places I’ve seen them lately. Not to mention the thousands of Pins on Pinterest. A friend of mine asked me to make seven burlap and lace corsage and boutonniere sets for some couples we were honoring at a 60th anniversary party our church hosted. I’m pretty sure I laughed when she asked me to do it. I know I asked her what the other decor items were, and told her I’d be much better at something else, because I had never really made fabric flowers. At least, not that any adult would wear. Well, I tried to get out of it, but she just wouldn’t budge. If she wasn’t my friend… ah, but she is, so I finally consented. The flowers were not as hard as I had imagined they would be. And, they were practically free because I used mostly materials I had in my fabric stash. Luckily another friend Tisha rescued me in my pitiful situation and offered to help. Tisha has made many fabric flowers for just such occasions, so I was extremely happy to have her help. And one of the best parts is that we didn’t sew anything. Yes, you read that right. We made these corsages and boutonnieres without sewing.

Materials: {some affiliate links below}

  • Burlap (1/4 yard should be plenty)
  • lace (I used both white and cream for variety)
  • white synthetic fabric (chiffon works great)
  • white crepe fabric (1/4 yard)
  • white felt
  • Pearl beads (I used 8mm, 10mm & 15mm)
  • twine
  • scissors
  • lighter, tea light, or gas stove (to curl the ends of the fabric)
  • white floral wire
  • pin backs for the corsages
  • pearl head pins for the boutonnieres
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks

Simple and quick Matching burlap and lace corsage and boutonniere sets. Perfect for weddings, dances, parties, anniversaries. Shabby Chic and elegant. Vintage, Country rustic weddings.I decided to go with a simple rose bud for the boutonnieres. After all, these men have been married over 60 years, they don’t want to wear something fluffy and girly. Not going to lie, the rose buds for the boutonnieres were hard to figure out. In fact, my friend Tisha was able to make them so much better than me. I may have even had her make all but 2… or so.

We made the rose buds in a similar fashion to the boutonniere found in this tutorial on DIY Weddings by Mette Morgan. However, we did not sew, we only used hot glue. And instead of using a small piece of lace, we used a piece the same size as the crepe and just wrapped and twisted together. Also, we didn’t have any feathers, but Tisha had some white floral wire, so we twisted it around a pencil before adding it between the flower and the burlap leaves. We did not add a safety pin to the back, we used pearl head pins to attach them to the men’s shirts.

Vintage, Country rustic weddings. For the burlap flower in the corsage, we made them similar to Jacki’s burlap flower tutorial at CraftingMom.com. They were so simple and quick to create.

For instructions for the cream lace flower, see this rolled flower tutorial by Jessica at Cherry Street Cottage. We rolled and twisted the flower from the beginning. We also wanted a small and more loose look, so we didn’t roll as tight as Jessica did. We loved the result.

For the layered white flower with pearls, see this great tutorial by Emily at Jones Design Company. After experimenting, we found that the best fabrics for this singe technique were synthetics… cotton fabrics didn’t singe or curl at all. {Don’t ask me how I know… haha!} So, fabrics like chiffon would work perfectly. We attached our layers of chiffon to each other with hot glue instead of stitching them.

We kind of scrunched them together and layered them with each other so there were no gaps.To give a little extra pop we added some more lace.  We scrunched (or fan folded) the lace lengthwise and then folded it in half, and attached it to the flowers and felt. To finish off the corsages we attached the pin backs with more hot glue.

The theme of the decor for the party was a charming vintage country. So the burlap and lace corsages and boutonnieres tied in beautifully. The couples all loved their  corsages and boutonnieres. In fact, one of the wives told me she’s worn her corsage several times since the party.
